Community Education and Training Sessions

Individuals and Community Groups are a valuable part of the Waterwatch network.

To increase your own or your group's awareness of water issues some regions can provide education and training opportunities. Depending on the region, topics can include:

Training in Water Quality Monitoring

Physical/Chemical Training

We will train you in the use of water monitoring equipment so you become familiar with the different physical and chemical tests that Waterwatch conducts. The tests are an excellent way to introduce you to the importance of water quality and we can also assist to develop water monitoring plans that clearly define the purpose of your monitoring.

Biological Training

We will train you to sample and identify creatures such as aquatic macro-invertebrates, frogs and fish, and provide you with information so you can learn about their lifecycles, habitats and features. You will be able to participate in environmental surveys such as Aquatic Snapshots and the EPA Frog Census.

An introduction to Waterwatch

Learn about the Waterwatch Program. Find out what it is and how you can get involved in an exciting environmental program that focuses on protecting our water environments and maintaining water quality in your local area.

Frogs

Learn about the amazing frogs of your local area and why they are bio-indicators. Listen to their unique calls and find out about the EPA Frog Census.

Aquatic Invertebrates

Learn how aquatic invertebrates are used as indicators of water health. Identify these creatures down at your local waterway. Use your skills to participate in Aquatic Snapshot Week.

Wetlands

Why are wetlands being built in SA? Join us indoors or out in the field to find out how your local wetlands improve water quality, and learn about the plants and animals that live in these areas.

* Should a tour of a wetland be required - transport will need to be arranged by the participants.

Catchment Friendly Gardening

Want to learn more about making your garden environmentally friendly? This session covers a range of environmental activities such as plant selection, creating habitat for native animals, using less chemicals and preventing weeds.

Habitats

Learn about the many different types of water habitats. Why are they important and what makes them healthy or unhealthy. Discover the different habitat zones that occur along a watercourse and learn how to conduct a habitat survey.

Estuarine Monitoring

Some of our watercourses are naturally tidal and saline. Learn more about our unique estuarine environments by using specially developed estuarine monitoring equipment. We will train you in the use of the equipment so you can participate in regular estuarine monitoring.

Saltwatch

Saltwatch is an environmental action program that focuses on an important land degradation issue - salinity. In South Australia there is increasing concern about salinity. Help monitor salinity levels within your local waterway and create a snapshot of our state's salinity levels.

Aquatic Snapshot

Grab a net and monitor the aquatic health of sites across the state. Sample aquatic macro-invertebrates and learn about their lifecycles and habitats. The diversity of aquatic macro-invertebrates can tell us a lot about the health of our waterways.

Community Action

Community Drain Stencilling

This program involves stencilling environmental messages in and around your local area and educating the community about stormwater issues.

Gutter Guardians

Find out why Autumn leaf fall is so bad for our watery environments. Sweep a street and help stop pollution entering the stormwater system. Collect, sort and weigh all the street materials you find to work out how much pollution you have saved from entering the stormwater system.
