As
part of our 2008 Winter Holiday Education Campaign at the Victor Harbor Civic Centre, Waterwatch Fleurieu and the
Victor Harbor Natural Resource Centre invited locals and holiday
visitors to
participate in activities focused on ‘Life below the surface of our
Rivers’,
with over 200 participants that took
part in identifying macroinvertebrates them under microscopes.
Local
Waterwatch Education Officer Malinda Roberts, pictured right, has
worked in the region for
over
two years and understands the importance of educating the community in
conserving the biodiversity of our local waterways.
"Waterwatch
Fleurieu believes this fun and interactive activity is a fantastic way
to reach
many people in a short amount of time in a casual environment. The
series of
community activities run by Waterwatch is aimed not only to increase
peoples’
awareness of the importance of water as a habitat for a diverse range
of flora
and fauna communities, but also educates us on how
to conserve our water resources for the
future."
Bringing together a range of people with different
backgrounds and
interests to celebrate and learn about the Fleurieu’s unique
environment, has
lead to a very successful winter event.
