The Bridgestone & Brahma Lodge Wetland Watch Program

Monitoring Site

Stormwater collection wetland in the Bridgestone Native Fauna Sanctuary at the Bridgestone Tyre Manufacturing Plant in Salisbury (Northern Adelaide and Barossa Catchment).

Information about the group

The Bridgestone Tyre Manufacturing Plant, Salisbury Primary School & Brahma Lodge Primary School have been monitoring the stormwater collection wetland for the past 2 years. The wetland is in the plant's dedicated Native Fauna Sanctuary, which is home to rehabilitated orphaned and injured native animals that arrive from the 'Fauna Care and Release' organisation.. The wetland is a major source of water for the animals and provides breeding habitat to many frogs and tortoises.

Why they got involved in Waterwatch

Bridgestone Engineer, and project contact, Rob Alberton was approached by the local Catchment Care Officer (Steve Clark) about planting up and around the wetland with the help of local schools. Steve also suggested it would be great to involve these schools in Waterwatch monitoring of the wetland site - to assess the on-going changes, as a result ofthe plantings, and to help Bridgestone monitor the quality of it's stormwater runoff.

Bridgestone places a high value on the results that are collected, directly using the Waterwatch data to assess the quality of the animal's drinking water and to identify any potential pollution problems.

Achievements & Activities

Activities

  • Presently the site is monitored for ph, turbidity, phosphate, nitrate, and electrical conductivity. They also survey gross pollutant traps, assess plant growth and note any waterfowl, frog, tortoise or other fauna observations.
  • Bridgestone employees have actively participated in Yellow Fish Road drain stencilling around the plant. This has involved painting Yellow Fish Road stencils on many of the plant's drainage pits and down pipes and providing every employee with a Yellow Fish Road flyer, to educate them about the program and the importance of preventing stormwater pollution on site.

Achievements

  • The wetland has become a popular feature and creates much interest amongst the local community.
  • The wetland program has featured in local newspapers and Bridgestone company newsletters. As a result, Bridgestone now run regular tours of the Native Fauna Sanctuary and wetland and are able to share their knowledge of wetlands, stormwater pollution and water quality management to actively help educate the greater public.
