New Monitoring Tools for Community Groups and Supporting Project Officers

SA Murray Darling Basing Waterwatch

The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board has developed a Community Monitoring Framework (CMF) and Tool Kit. The purpose of the CMF is to guide stakeholders in the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management region on how to achieve the greatest value from community based monitoring.

The Tool Kit provides practical “hands-on” resources and information to help community groups to get started with planning through to evaluation and reflection. The CMF and Tool Kit are for community based monitoring groups setting up, established groups or project officers supporting a community based monitoring group.

Why use the CMF and Tool Kit?
Whether you and your group are monitoring for educational purposes or to inform decision making it is important that your monitoring effort is being maximised. Also it is very important that the data collected is credible, reliable and comparable over time and location. The best approach to ensure this is to have an effective monitoring program. An effective monitoring program incorporates all stages of the community based monitoring cycle from planning the monitoring, collecting, analysing and interpreting the data, communicating and reviewing results and determining the next phase of monitoring from this new knowledge.

The CMF and Tool Kit contains generic tools and templates for adaptation and use to address the stages in the community based monitoring cycle. The CMF and Tool Kit will be available from the SA MDB NRM Board website at www.samdbnrm.sa.gov.au soon!
