Gutter Guardians 2004
During
autumn hundreds of groups across the State will become Gutter
Guardians and learn about stormwater pollution issues and take
action to improve the health of our waterways.
Leaves and litter get washed into
our rivers and creeks, via the stormwater system and create problems
for our waterways and the creatures that call them home. During
May over 120 Gutter Guardian groups will hit the streets,
with brooms, rakes and gloves to prevent tonnes of pollution from
entering our waterways.
Groups from all over the state will
participate in the action-based program and sweep a 50-metre length
of street gutter.
The sweepings are sorted and students
calculate the types and amount of stormwater pollutants entering
our stormwater systems. Last year, Gutter Guardians collected more
than 1800 shopping bags full of leaf litter, soil and rubbish from
the Torrens and Patawalonga Catchment areas alone! That's enough
to fill 160 wheelie bins and weighed over 3 tonnes.
Anyone can be a Gutter Guardian,
so register your interest today and receive a 'Gutter Guardian Pack'
to start taking action against stormwater pollution.
Contact your local Waterwatch
officer to get involved in Gutter Guardians.
